I was looking at some Anti-Virus Comparative Websites (http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/04/26/ask-raymond-what-is-the-best-antivirus/) Last Night.

I would suggest either of the following:
Avira AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/en/products/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html) - Premium seems to be a good one, seems to be one of the top performers on the websites. But also there is a Free version available, if you want to try it.

Kaspersky AntiVirus (http://www.kaspersky.com/) - This is what I use (version 6), but version 7 has been out for a while and 8 is out soon. This is what I recommend to others. Trial periods available / purchase keys for normal use. Free scanning / removal tool available.

F-Secure AntiVirus (http://www.f-secure.com/) - Not Used this but seems to be good performer.

NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/) - Only used this for a short while, a lot of iWookies seem to be using this one. Trials available / purchase keys for normal use. Free scanning / removal tool available.

Others:
Norton - Not used since Version 2003, was slow then and let a few viruses slip through. So can't comment on newer versions.

McAfee - Think Steelm@n still uses the 8.0 / 8.5 Corporate Enterprise versions of this, unless he's changed it. Also the same version that is used at my work, no idea on whether it's a good performer.

Other Free AV's:
AVG - Not used, free version available.
Avast - Not used, free version available.

My comments on that (generally excellent) advice...

Avira AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/en/products/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html) - Premium seems to be a good one, seems to be one of the top performers on the websites. But also there is a Free version available, if you want to try it.
No experience

:sorcerer:Kaspersky AntiVirus (http://www.kaspersky.com/) - This is what I use (version 6), but version 7 has been out for a while and 8 is out soon. This is what I recommend to others. Trial periods available / purchase keys for normal use. Free scanning / removal tool available.
Solid performer, good performance-power ratio. Recommended.

F-Secure AntiVirus (http://www.f-secure.com/) - Not Used this but seems to be good performer.
Strong AV removal, but the biggest system hog in existence (up to 40% memory leakage). Have used this in a number of corporate scenario's, avoid like the plague.

NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/) - Only used this for a short while, a lot of iWookies seem to be using this one. Trials available / purchase keys for normal use. Free scanning / removal tool available.
Again, no personal experience, but have heard colleagues recommend this.

Others:
Norton - Not used since Version 2003, was slow then and let a few viruses slip through. So can't comment on newer versions.
Agree - Norton = Awful

:sorcerer: McAfee - Think Steelm@n still uses the 8.0 / 8.5 Corporate Enterprise versions of this, unless he's changed it. Also the same version that is used at my work, no idea on whether it's a good performer.
I've got a couple of installs of 8.5 corporate, solid AV, low resources. Best mainstream AV going IMO. Recommended

Other Free AV's:
:sorcerer: AVG - Not used, free version available.
In use for a number of customers, no complaints, but limited scope due to free nature.
Avast - Not used, free version available.
Useful as a portable AV for your memory stick, but misses a good number of new threats due to limited updates.

Also, Clamwin is worth a mention, small and compact, simple but effective.

Hope this helps,

Rick

^^ I must admit, I'm the same. No AV, just hardware firewall, firefox, and no pop3 e-mail.

Guess it depends on what you use the PC for in the first place, and what files you've been using.

Anyway, if you've never had a AV on that machine, then how would you know your NOT infected with some sort of Virus or Trojan or Keylogger?
Especially someone who downloads potentially "malicious" Trainers for Games.

I use my pc for everything pretty much, there are more than likely infected files laying about but only coz i've downloaded them knowing what they are, the trainers i've got are clean n only from well known creators, and I know what every running process is hidden and not, registiry is clean from unwanted startup items, as is msconfig....once you know how to make malicious things you know how not to get them or know if you've got them. people make to much fuss over viruses n stuff anyway

I have had a year or so not using AV, but don't recommend it unless you are really sure of what you are doing. It's easy to come unstuck if you are a regular P2P downloader. I use AVG at work but don't recommend it due to too many false positives. I have tried them all over the years and recommend Nod32 due to it's efficiency and not hogging system resources. The ones I like least are Fsecure, Norton and McAfee mainly due to the amount of system resources they use and over complicated interfaces.

im an avg user, prefer it over others, gives daily updates [in 250kb packets or so] and has options for running in the background, but generally uses up few resources. plus works well with many firewalls, like zone alarm.

icytouch - ithink you should download nod32 trial version just to see how much crap you do have on your pc.
Think it will be a real eye opener?
