HI i have sky mid package and not happy with the speeds, going to max would not be any better. Used to get high speeds with blueyonder.

Any advice greatly appreciated.:sorcerer:

ADSL is lagging behind ATM, virgin media group's (NTL, telewest, etc) cable based offerings are going up to 50mb down this year, and currently offer a 20mb service.

I've been with NTL (virgin) for years, and have always had good speeds, and the one fault I encountered was fixed when I had an engineer upgrade my modem.

Please note that although I work in IT for a living (for a telecoms company no less), my views are entirely personal.

Hope that helps, and that you are eligible for cable in your area :)

The exact opposite of me! You'd think working for an ADSL company would mean quick, dedicated pipes, guess not... I can top 2200 at home on my 20meg :P so yeah, work is really slow...

IMO, cable isn't cheap, but it is better...

Scotty, is that you hacking peoples accounts again?

Still, on a serious note, might be an idea, they'd no doubt offer a 3-4 hop service to the server box. All depends on whether you want more general speed or a better ping to the server...

This is my gaming ping using Cybernetic adsl.

I could only get 3.5 meg download with max on B.T until I did some research and digging. Pm me Mac (Kev) and I can tell you how I now achieve a 6.6 meg download. This is a reliable connection and service now as well.

If I had the choice though, I would have a cable connection.

Nice route there rev_bob.

Whats the story with the cybernetics ADSL then? Assume its the standard 20:1 BT wholesale option? I noticed the BW cap, but what about peak usage throttling?

Cable still rocks...

I personally would recommend Virgin Media, been with NTL since they released broadband and never had problems with speeds really unless their having difficulties and do not inform you.

But all in all they are very good with general connection and its ability is vast and make sure to watch what they offer you, most of the time you can haggle a better deal :D.

All in your own choice and remember there are pro's and con's to every provider.

I personally would recommend Virgin Media, been with NTL since they released broadband and never had problems with speeds really unless their having difficulties and do not inform you.I think Camshi is talking cable here, not ADSL. As most of you know I have been with Telewest, now Virgin media since it started. I was on Telewest Dialup (Cableinet as it was known) before broadband. I moved to cable broadband in 2000 and there have been ups and downs. Generally the service has been good.

Since Virgin took over recently the telephone support has been moved to premium rate call centres in India. The people there are polite in reading their cue sheets but ill informed and lack technical ability. However when I last had a problem I posted on VM newsgroup support and had it sorted instantly. This was after I phoned the call centre in India and spoke to someone that had less knowledge about the system than I did. How is that possible when I know next to bugger all?

The other problem is bandwidth shaping. This does not cause me any problems while gaming but does when downloading.

From Virgin Media:

During peak times, the top 3% of downloaders on the Size: L package download at least 800MB of traffic each, with the top 3% of uploaders uploading at least 325MB of traffic each.

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till 9pm) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 1Mb, with their upload speed set to 128Kb. This will last for 5 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.
